End of your speed pedelec lease: what to do when you buy it

Your lease is coming to an end and you have decided to buy your speed pedelec. Good news: the bike stays with you. But unlike a regular e-bike, a speed pedelec is registered, and its number plate is not in your name.

This article explains, step by step, what KAMEO does, what you need to do on your side, and what not to forget so you can get back on the road legally, with a plate in your own name.

Procedure valid in Belgium, based on the DIV (FPS Mobility and Transport) rules in force in October 2026. Since 1 August 2025, a speed pedelec already registered in Belgium can be re-registered directly by your insurer, with no prior step at bpost.

Why the plate doesn't stay with you

In Belgium, a number plate belongs to its holder, not to the vehicle. During the lease, KAMEO is the registered holder of your speed pedelec's plate.

When you buy the bike, it changes owner. The plate, however, cannot be transferred from a company to a private individual: it has to be deregistered, and the bike re-registered in your name with a new plate.

In short
→ KAMEO deregisters the old plate and gives you the bike's documents
→ Your insurer re-registers the bike in your name
→ The DIV sends you the new plate and the new registration certificate

Step 1 — Return the plate to KAMEO

Remove the plate from your speed pedelec and hand it over to KAMEO. We take care of deregistering it with the DIV: there is nothing for you to do for this part.

Important: no plate, no road
→ Without a valid plate, the speed pedelec may not be ridden on public roads.
→ Book an appointment with your insurer before returning the plate, to keep the number of days without your bike to a minimum.
→ Only an official deregistration counts. A plate simply removed and kept at home remains active in KAMEO's name.

Step 2 — Collect the bike's documents

In return, KAMEO gives you your speed pedelec's official documents. Your insurer needs them to re-register the bike. Keep the originals somewhere safe and make a copy.

Document 1

The certificate of conformity (COC)

Issued by the manufacturer, it proves your model is type-approved under European rules. It is required for any registration and may be requested during a roadside check.

Document 2

The registration certificate

The bike's logbook, in KAMEO's name. It has two parts: you received the first one at delivery, and KAMEO now gives you the second. Your insurer needs both.

Also

The purchase invoice

It proves you now own the bike. Your insurer may ask for it, and it will be useful for the warranty and any future resale.

Step 3 — Re-register through your insurer

With these documents, contact your insurer or broker. They re-register the bike in your name, directly online with the DIV.

The form Your insurer gives you the (pink) registration application form. You fill it in and sign it — they can help you complete it.

The application They submit it through WebDIV, the DIV application reserved for insurers. For a speed pedelec, no insurance sticker is required on the form.

Delivery The new S-P plate and the new registration certificate, in your name, are delivered to your home by the postman, normally on the next working day. A fee is payable on delivery.

If it's rejected If WebDIV rejects the application, the insurer gives you proof of the rejection. The full file is then sent to the DIV by post or handed in at a DIV counter, by appointment.

Don't forget insurance

The insurance linked to your lease ends with the contract. From the moment you buy the bike, covering it is up to you.

Third-party liability
→ In Belgium, motor vehicle liability insurance is only legally required if the speed pedelec can move on its own, without pedalling, at more than 25 km/h. For a speed pedelec with pedal assistance only, your family liability policy normally covers damage to third parties.
→ Check with your insurer: some family policies exclude speed pedelecs.
→ Riding abroad? In the Netherlands, France or Germany, specific liability insurance may be required.

Theft and damage
→ A speed pedelec is rarely covered against theft by home insurance. Theft or comprehensive bike insurance is strongly recommended, starting from the day you buy the bike.

The rules that don't change

Owner or not, your speed pedelec is still a class P moped. The basic obligations are the same as during the lease.

Always with you

The certificate of conformity and the registration certificate, together with your driving licence.

Licence and age

An AM or B driving licence is required, and the minimum age is 16.

Helmet

An approved helmet is mandatory: a moped helmet, or a speed-pedelec bike helmet that also protects the temples and the back of the head.

Mirror and maintenance

The left-hand mirror remains mandatory. Maintenance is no longer included in a lease: our workshop is here for you.

Your questions

Can I keep my current plate number?

No. The plate is in KAMEO's name and cannot be transferred to a private individual. You will receive a new S-P plate in your name when the bike is re-registered.

Can I ride between returning the plate and receiving the new one?

No. A speed pedelec may only be ridden on public roads with a valid plate and an up-to-date registration certificate. Book your insurer appointment before returning the plate to keep this gap as short as possible.

I've lost part of the registration certificate or the certificate of conformity. What now?

Let us know before your contract ends. For a lost registration certificate, a certificate of loss must be obtained from the police. For a lost certificate of conformity, a duplicate can be requested from the manufacturer: KAMEO handles this with you.

Can my insurer refuse to re-register the bike?

Since liability insurance is not mandatory for most speed pedelecs, an insurer you have no policy with is not obliged to do it. Go to the insurer or broker who already covers your family or your car, or the one you take out theft insurance for the bike with.

Does buying the bike have tax implications?

If the bike is sold to you below its real value, the difference may be treated as a benefit in kind. The buy-back price is set in your contract: if in doubt, check with your employer or payroll provider.
