Thinking of buying an electric bike in 2026 and wondering whether any financial support still exists? Good question — and the answer has changed. Wallonia scrapped its regional grant on 1 January 2026, causing considerable confusion among prospective buyers. However, other schemes remain firmly in place.
Brussels keeps its Bruxell'Air grant, many Walloon and Flemish municipalities offer their own incentives, and the cycling allowance has just been raised to €0.37 per kilometre for 2026. By combining these schemes intelligently, it is entirely possible to significantly reduce the purchase cost of your electric bike.
At KAMEO Bikes, we guide our customers in Liège and Brussels-Uccle through this process every day. This guide provides a complete overview of everything still available in 2026 — region by region.
At a glance
- Wallonia : regional grant abolished since 1 January 2026 — but municipalities remain active.
- Brussels : Bruxell'Air grant still available, between €526 and €1,052 depending on income.
- Flanders : no regional grant — municipal grants vary by commune.
- Across Belgium : cycling allowance raised to €0.37/km in 2026, tax-free ceiling of €3,690/year.
- Municipal grants and the cycling allowance are stackable.
Wallonia: regional grant gone, municipalities still active
This is the biggest change of 2026: the Walloon Region no longer grants any subsidy for the purchase of an electric bike, cargo bike, or electric assistance kit for private individuals. The last regional grant applied exclusively to purchases made before 31 December 2025. No new applications can be submitted.
However, many Walloon municipalities maintain their own grants, independently of the region. Amounts typically range between €50 and €400, sometimes more for low-income households or cargo bikes. It is strongly recommended to check your municipality's website or contact its mobility service before making any purchase.
Pending applications: if you already submitted a Walloon grant application via monespace.wallonie.be before 31 December 2025, don't worry — all applications already submitted will be processed by the administration.
Brussels: the Bruxell'Air grant is still live
The Brussels Capital Region maintains its flagship scheme: the Bruxell'Air grant, aimed at Brussels residents who give up their car in favour of a sustainable mobility alternative. If you de-register your licence plate, you can receive up to €1,052, which can be used to purchase an electric bike among other options.
| Annual taxable income | Bruxell'Air amount |
|---|---|
| Below €37,600 (single) / €52,600 (couple) | €1,052 |
| Between €37,600 and €75,100 (single) | €726 |
| Above €75,100 (single) | €526 |
To benefit, you must be registered in the Brussels Capital Region and de-register a licence plate in your name that has been active for at least two years.
In addition to the regional Bruxell'Air, several Brussels municipalities offer stackable complementary grants. For example: Sint-Agatha-Berchem offers up to €200 for an electric bike, Etterbeek adds €250 (in local currency Broebel) for Bruxell'Air beneficiaries, and Brussels-City provides up to €300 for young people aged 16 to 18.
Cargo bike in Brussels: businesses can also benefit from a specific grant for cargo bike purchases, covering between 40% and 70% of the pre-tax price, up to a maximum of €4,000 per cargo bike and €2,000 per trailer.
Flanders: no regional grant, but active municipalities
Flanders offers no regional grant for the purchase of an electric bike for private individuals. The Flemish Region focuses its investments on developing cycling infrastructure and promoting active mobility.
That said, several Flemish municipalities offer their own grants. Since amounts and conditions vary by municipality, check directly with your local authority or your municipality's website.
Tip: even without a purchase grant, Flemish residents benefit fully from the cycling allowance (see next section) and can also benefit from a company bike through their employer — a very attractive tax advantage.
The cycling allowance: the most universal benefit
This is the federal measure that applies to all Belgian employees, regardless of their region. In 2026, the cycling allowance has been increased to €0.37 per kilometre cycled for home-to-work commutes.
This allowance is fully exempt from personal income tax and social security contributions, up to the ceiling of €3,690/year. It applies to all bike types: standard, electric, cargo, and speed pedelec.
For a commuter covering 10 km return each working day, this amounts to approximately €930 gross per year, entirely tax-free. Over three years, that is nearly €2,800 — more than enough to offset the purchase of a quality electric bike.
Company bike: your employer can also provide you with a bike. In that case, all acquisition, maintenance, and repair costs are 100% tax-deductible for the company. Accessories (helmet, lock, bags) are included.

How to maximise your grants before buying
The good news: most of these schemes are stackable. Here are the steps to take before your purchase.
- Check your municipality: visit your local authority's website or contact the mobility department to find out what municipal grants are available. Amounts and conditions change regularly.
- If you live in Brussels: look into the Bruxell'Air grant before purchasing — it requires de-registering a licence plate, which needs to be planned in advance.
- Talk to your employer: the cycling allowance is often unknown or not activated. A simple agreement with your employer is enough to benefit from it from your very first commute by bike.
- Keep your invoice: all grants require a named invoice stating the type of bike and the VAT-inclusive price, issued by a professional retailer.
- Mind the timing: buy your bike before de-registering your plate if you are targeting the Bruxell'Air — the de-registration must happen within the timeframes set out in the scheme's rules.
At KAMEO Bikes: our in-store advisors in Liège and Brussels-Uccle can guide you through the grants available in your municipality and provide you with an invoice that meets the requirements of grant-issuing bodies. Don't hesitate to ask during your visit.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Walloon grant still be claimed for a purchase made in 2025? +
Yes, if you bought your bike before 31 December 2025 and have not yet submitted your application, it can still be processed. All applications already submitted via monespace.wallonie.be will also be handled. However, no new applications are possible for purchases made from 1 January 2026 onwards.
Can the Bruxell'Air grant be combined with a Brussels municipal grant? +
In most cases, yes. The regional Bruxell'Air grant can be combined with a Brussels municipal grant, subject to your municipality's rules. Check with your municipal administration for the stacking conditions applicable to your situation.
Does the cycling allowance apply to speed pedelecs? +
Yes. Since 1 January 2017, the cycling allowance also applies to speed pedelecs for home-to-work commutes. The tax-free amount in 2026 is €0.37/km, up to a maximum of €3,690/year.
Is a second-hand bike eligible for municipal grants? +
It depends on the municipality. Some municipal grants are reserved for new bikes, others accept second-hand bikes purchased from a professional retailer. In all cases, a named invoice issued by a professional retailer is required — private purchases are generally not eligible.
