Multicharger4: what changes from the Multicharger3, and should you wait for it?

It is one of the questions we are asked most often in the shop at the moment: ‘The new Multicharger is coming, should I wait?’ On 24 June 2026, Riese & Müller unveiled the Multicharger4, successor to the Multicharger3. The first customer bikes are expected in March 2027.

This article sorts it all out: what really changes between the two generations, what that means for you day to day, and in which cases a Multicharger3 available today remains the best choice.

Specifications: official Riese & Müller press release of 24 June 2026. Multicharger4 entry price: announcement reported by the specialist press, Belgian price to be confirmed. Multicharger3 prices incl. VAT: our catalogue as at 15 September 2026. Full sources at the end of the article.

200 kg

maximum permitted total weight, compared with 160 kg for the Multicharger3. Enough for an adult, two children and the shopping.

80 kg

on the extended rear rack, instead of 65 kg. A teenager or a light adult can ride on it.

1,600 Wh

of energy possible with the optional second battery. Enough for several days of journeys without recharging.

The short answer, if you are in a hurry

Three situations, three answers. The rest of the article explains why.

YOU NEED ONE NOW the Multicharger3 remains an excellent bike, available straight away, and you will be riding all winter.

YOU CARRY HEAVY LOADS two growing children, an adult on the back, big shopping trips: the Multicharger4's 200 kg are worth the wait.

YOU FIND IT HARD TO GET ON the Multicharger4's lowered frame is easier to step through, especially when the bike is loaded.

What is the Multicharger?

A ‘midtail’: an electric bike slightly longer than a standard bike, with a reinforced rear rack. It is designed to carry children, shopping or luggage without the length of a longtail or the bulk of a front-loading cargo bike.

The Multicharger4 keeps that idea. Riese & Müller says it wants a bike that rides like a touring bike while carrying much more.

‘With the Multicharger4, we are evolving our midtail concept and refining the bike into a true all-rounder, able to meet very different needs.’

Dominik Mahr, Head of Design at Riese & Müller (press release of 24 June 2026, our translation)

What changes between the Multicharger3 and the Multicharger4

Six changes really matter day to day. Here they are, from the most visible to the most discreet.

1. It carries more. 200 kg maximum permitted total weight (previously 160 kg) and 80 kg on the rear rack (previously 65 kg). In practice: you keep the same bike as the children grow.

2. A single, lower frame. The Multicharger3 came with a Mixte frame and a high frame. The Multicharger4 has just one shape, with a lowered top tube. Swinging your leg over is easier, even with a child seat on the back.

3. Two sizes instead of two frames. S/M and L/XL. The bike stays compact: 191.5 cm long in size M, it parks and manoeuvres like a city bike.

4. A bigger battery as standard. Bosch PowerTube 800 Wh across the range, and an optional second 800 Wh battery, for 1,600 Wh in total.

5. Redesigned accessories. New Safety bar, new kickstand, new rain cover, new adjustable stem. Details below.

6. Five ‘kits’ instead of a long list of options. You choose a use, and the kit brings together the right accessories.

Five kits for five ways of riding

Rather than ticking options one by one, you start from how you will use the bike. Each kit brings together accessories designed to work together: large panniers, frame bag, Safety bar with two cushions, Sideloader, weather cover, depending on the case.

PASSENGER KIT for carrying a passenger on the back.

CARGO KIT AND CARGO KIT PLUS for shopping, work equipment or multi-day trips.

FAMILY KIT AND FAMILY KIT PLUS for school and the children's activities, with rain protection.

The exact contents of each kit will be confirmed when the bikes arrive. We will go through them with you in the shop.

The new features that make everyday life easier

A Safety bar that opens

It folds down. Your child climbs onto the back on their own, without you having to lift them.

A more stable kickstand

The new two-legged kickstand holds the bike nice and upright, even when loaded, while you settle the children in.

An adjustable stem

You adjust the handlebar angle to suit your position. The SP Connect+ smartphone mount is integrated and the cables are partly hidden.

A highly visible rain cover

Its reflective fabric makes the bike and the children clearly visible, a real plus in the Belgian November rain.

Removable guards

The spoke guards and chain guard are fitted as standard and come off easily. Servicing in the workshop is quicker.

Two child seats in one click

The rear rack's MIK HD system lets you attach accessories quickly and securely, including two child seats.

Motors and gears: the same families

On the motor side, no revolution: Bosch motors depending on the version (Performance Line PX, CX and Cargo Line, including a Speed version at 45 km/h). If you are torn between these motors, our complete Bosch guide 2026 explains their differences simply.

For gears, the choice remains wide:

FAMILYNexus 5-speed hub: simple and maintenance-free, for the city.

TOURINGShimano Cues 10-speed derailleur: the most versatile, for hilly terrain.

VARIO, AUTOMATIC, VARIO HSEnviolo hub: smooth gear changes, even when stopped at a red light.

ROHLOFF HS14-speed electric hub: the top of the range for long, fast journeys.

Four colours are announced: lava, magnesium, tierra and tundra grey.

The questions we are asked in the shop

When can I try a Multicharger4?

Riese & Müller announces availability in the first quarter of 2027, with the first customer bikes in March. Let us know you are interested: we will tell you as soon as the test bike arrives in Liège or Brussels.

How much will the Multicharger4 cost?

The specialist press reports a price from €4,999 for the entry-level version. Riese & Müller has not yet published prices per version. We will confirm Belgian prices as soon as they are published.

Will the accessories from my Multicharger3 fit the Multicharger4?

Not necessarily: the frame, the Safety bar and the rear rack have been redesigned. Bring your list of accessories and we will check compatibility part by part.

Can I lease it through my employer?

Yes, just like the Multicharger3. The Multicharger4 can be offered through bike leasing as soon as it is available. Talk to your employer or to our team.

Will a Multicharger3 bought today still be supported?

Yes. It uses standard Bosch and Riese & Müller components, which our workshops service and repair. The release of a new generation changes nothing about servicing the previous one.
