We are often asked: "Is there any financial support for switching to a cargo bike?" The answer is yes — and in Wallonia, it is particularly attractive. The Region reimburses 50% of your investment in a bike, cargo bike or trailer, new or second-hand, with or without electric assistance.
Whether you are self-employed, run an SME or manage a public body, if you carry goods or provide services that involve moving equipment by bike as part of your work, this grant is for you. Here is everything you need to know.
In practice, how much can you get?
The grant covers 50% of the price excl. VAT, within caps set by the Region. Here are the maximum amounts by type of equipment:
New equipment
- Bike or cargo bike without electric assistance: €1,500
- Bike or cargo bike with electric assistance: €5,000
- Bike trailer: €3,500
Second-hand equipment
- Bike or cargo bike without electric assistance: €800
- Bike or cargo bike with electric assistance: €2,500
- Bike trailer: €1,750
The subsidy is capped at €50,000 per beneficiary over three financial years. It is available until the budget allocated by Wallonia runs out.
Does it apply to your situation?
The grant is aimed at self-employed workers and legal entities under private or public law — companies, non-profits, municipalities, etc. — provided they have a place of business in Wallonia and carry out at least 75% of the activities using the subsidised equipment on Walloon territory.
In practice, that covers a wide range: the restaurant owner transporting produce, the tradesperson moving tools, the independent courier, the company wanting to green its urban logistics. If your work involves moving goods by bike, you are very likely eligible.
Only invoices dated from 02/01/2024 onwards are taken into account. If you bought your equipment after that date and have not yet applied, it is not too late.
Why switch to an electric cargo bike?
-
💸 Cut your costs
Less fuel, no city-centre parking charges, lighter maintenance. The cost per kilometre of a cargo bike is far lower than that of a petrol or diesel van.
-
⚡ Gain agility
Traffic jams, pedestrian zones, parking problems: the cargo bike gets round all these obstacles for faster journeys in dense urban areas.
-
🌿 Strengthen your image
Wallonia has committed to cutting its greenhouse gas emissions by 55%. Switching to a cargo bike is a concrete contribution to that goal — and a way to show it to your customers.
What you need to comply with
A few key points to bear in mind before submitting your application:
- 📍 Your place of business must be located in Wallonia.
- 🔁 The equipment must remain on your company's balance sheet as an asset for 3 years.
- 🛒 For second-hand equipment: it must be bought from a professional seller (not a private individual), with a proper invoice.
- 🔗 Combining with other aid is possible, provided that total subsidies do not exceed 80% of the price excl. VAT. However, double Walloon regional funding for the same equipment is prohibited.
- 📋 The grant is subject to the de minimis rule (EU Regulation No 1407/2013).
